Geography and communities

The county occupies a mix of river plain and upland terrain. Much of the land is devoted to row crops and pasture, with wooded stream corridors and limestone bluffs near the river. History and name

Pike County was organized in the early 19th century and is one of several U.S. counties named for the explorer and soldier Zebulon M. Pike. Its development followed patterns common to Illinois frontier counties: early river transport, establishment of a county seat, and gradual agricultural settlement and town founding through the 19th century.

Economy and recreation

The local economy is largely agricultural, featuring corn, soybeans and livestock, supplemented by services, small manufacturing and tourism.
