Geography and environment
Pierce County stretches from the urban shorelines of Puget Sound eastward into the Cascade Range. It includes lowland river valleys and forested foothills, and encompasses part of Mount Rainier and adjacent national park and wilderness areas. Major rivers such as the Puyallup and Carbon flow from the mountains to the sound, shaping agricultural floodplains as well as urban development.
History and development
The county traces its origins to the mid-19th century and was named for President Franklin Pierce. Its growth followed the arrival of railroads, shipping facilities and industries centered on timber, shipping and manufacturing. Over the 20th century Tacoma emerged as the county's principal city and port, while suburban communities developed around military installations and regional transportation corridors.
Government and economy
Pierce County operates under a county government that provides regional services, public safety, health and land-use planning. The local economy is diverse: the Port of Tacoma remains a major freight and logistics hub; large military installations support defense and related industries; agriculture in river valleys supplies regional markets; and service, healthcare and education are important employers.
Culture, attractions and communities
The county offers museums, parks and annual events that attract residents and visitors.
