Phillip "Phil" Walsh (15 March 1960 – 3 July 2015) was an Australian rules footballer and coach. Born in Hamilton, Victoria, he played at senior level during the 1980s and later built a long coaching career that included assistant roles at several Australian Football League (AFL) clubs and a brief period as senior coach of the Adelaide Football Club.

Early life and playing career

Walsh came from regional Victoria and progressed to play in the national competition during a period when the game was transitioning from the VFL to the modern AFL era. He was active as a player in the Victorian Football League (VFL) and represented multiple clubs, bringing versatility and strong football intelligence to his on-field roles. His senior playing career included time at Collingwood, Richmond and the Brisbane Bears. His experience as a player provided a foundation for his later work as a coach and developer of players.

Coaching career

After retiring from playing Walsh moved into coaching and gained a reputation for tactical insight and attention to detail. He served in assistant coaching positions at several AFL clubs, including Geelong, West Coast and Port Adelaide, where he worked on game planning and midfield development. He also coached at state-league level and was respected for his ability to mentor younger players and implement structured game plans. His varied roles reflected a breadth of experience across different clubs and competitions.

Adelaide tenure

In 2015 Walsh was appointed senior coach of the Adelaide Football Club, taking charge for that AFL season. His appointment represented the peak of a long coaching pathway. Colleagues and players often described his coaching style as cerebral and meticulous, focused on structure and detailed analysis of opposition tactics.

Death and aftermath

Walsh was fatally stabbed at his home in Somerton Park, South Australia on 3 July 2015. He was 55. The incident shocked the football community and led to an immediate police investigation; his son was arrested in connection with the event and subsequent legal proceedings followed. The death prompted widespread public tributes and remembrances from clubs, players and supporters across the game.
