As a diocesan bishop and archbishop, Gerety’s responsibilities included oversight of parishes, clergy assignments, Catholic education programs, charitable work, and administrative governance of diocesan structures. Like other ordinary bishops, he was charged with implementing church teachings and policies within his jurisdiction and coordinating pastoral care across urban and rural communities in his dioceses.

Gerety’s tenure in Portland and Newark took place during a period of considerable change for the Roman Catholic Church and American society. Bishops of his generation navigated the practical effects of liturgical and pastoral reforms, demographic shifts among parish populations, and evolving relationships between the church and broader civic institutions. As archbishop, his role included representing the archdiocese in public and ecumenical settings and guiding Catholic institutions such as schools, hospitals, and charitable agencies.

Notable distinctions attached to Gerety later in life were chiefly linked to his longevity and long record of service. Living to age 104 placed him among the longest-lived Catholic hierarchy in modern times. After retirement he retained the honorary title of archbishop emeritus and was recognized by peers and successors for decades of continuous association with the church’s leadership.
