Pentaerythritol tetranitrate (commonly abbreviated PETN and sometimes called PENT, PENTA, TEN, penthrite or nitropenta) is an organic nitrate ester noted for its high explosive power and for a separate medical application as a nitrate vasodilator. Chemically it is the tetra-nitrate ester of pentaerythritol, often written by the formula C5H8N4O12. PETN is classified among high explosives and has a high detonation performance, with a relative effectiveness factor often cited around 1.66 compared with TNT.
