Overview

Acqueville was a small rural commune in the Calvados department of the former administrative region of Basse-Normandie, in northwestern France. It ceased to exist as an independent municipality on 1 January 2019 when it was amalgamated into the newly formed commune of Cesny-les-Sources. The village exemplifies the many modest, historically agricultural settlements that characterize the Norman countryside.

Geography and characteristics

The locality sits within the gently rolling landscape typical of the region: small fields, hedgerows and lanes known as the bocage. Houses and farmsteads are scattered around a central hamlet rather than concentrated in a dense urban core. The rural setting has shaped land use, with pastures, arable plots and small woodlands forming the surrounding mosaic.

History and administration

Like many French communes, Acqueville was the basic unit of local government, responsible for civil registration, local roads and community life. Administrative reforms and the recent trend toward creating "communes nouvelles" led to its merger. The change, effective 1 January 2019, transferred local responsibilities and representation to the council of Cesny-les-Sources while preserving historical place names and many local traditions.

Economy, culture and significance

Economic activity in and around Acqueville has been dominated by agriculture and small-scale rural enterprises. The broader Calvados area is known for apple cultivation, cider and distilled apple brandy, and for tourist interest in Norman history — features that shape regional identity even if not every hamlet is directly involved. Cultural life in small communes typically centers on parish festivals, communal associations and local heritage initiatives.
