Overview

The Pasco Region is an administrative area in central Peru. Its capital is the city of Cerro de Pasco, and the region lies within the high Andean zone of the country often associated with mountain plateaus and steep valleys. Pasco forms part of the Peruvian central highlands and has a mixed urban and rural population with strong ties to traditional Andean life.

Geography and environment

Escudo regional Pasco.png Pasco's landscape includes high-altitude plains, mountain ranges, rivers and small lakes. The climate varies from cold, windy puna to milder valleys where cultivation is possible. Soils and watercourses are influenced by both natural processes and intensive mineral extraction, which has produced visible environmental impacts in some areas.

Economy and land use

The regional economy is dominated by mining, agriculture and livestock. Key activities include:

  • Mining of polymetallic deposits around Cerro de Pasco and other districts.
  • Smallholder agriculture, especially tubers and grains adapted to high altitudes.
  • Pastoralism, notably alpaca and sheep in upland zones.

Mining has driven infrastructure and settlement patterns but also created economic dependence and debate about sustainable development.

History and culture

Pasco has pre-Columbian Andean roots and was incorporated into the Inca realm before Spanish colonial mining intensified extraction in the highlands. Indigenous languages and customs persist alongside Catholic and mestizo traditions; local festivals, textile production and cuisine reflect a blend of ancestral and colonial influences.

Administration and notable facts

The region is subdivided into provinces and districts that manage local affairs and services. Cerro de Pasco is notable as one of the world's highest major mining towns. Pasco is often discussed in national contexts because of its strategic mineral resources, its cultural heritage, and ongoing concerns about environmental health and community well being.
