Parainen (Pargas)

Geography and settlements

Parainen is characterised by a fragmented coastline and a dense island landscape that is typical of the Archipelago Sea. Settlements range from the town centre on the larger islands to small fishing villages and summer cottage areas. The varied shoreline supports rich birdlife and marine habitats, and parts of the area are popular for boating, angling and nature tourism.

History and administration

The present municipality was formed as Väståboland on 1 January 2009 when the former municipalities of Pargas, Nagu, Korpo, Houtskär and Iniö were merged into a single administrative unit. The merged entity later adopted the name Parainen (Pargas). The municipal organisation combines local services across islands and mainland areas, balancing the needs of year-round residents and seasonal visitors.

Language and culture

Swedish is the majority language in Parainen, and both Swedish and Finnish are used in public life. The bilingual character shapes local schools, cultural events and place names. Maritime traditions, small-scale agriculture and island folk culture remain visible in festivals, local museums and community activities.

Economy and transport

The local economy is mixed: services, small manufacturing, maritime businesses and tourism are important. Many residents work in nearby urban centres such as Turku while others are employed locally in fisheries, boat services and hospitality. Transport around the archipelago relies on a network of bridges, causeways and ferry links together with roads connecting to the mainland.
