Aunay-sur-Odon

Geography and name

The town’s name literally means "Aunay on the Odon," referring to its position beside the Odon river. The riverside setting shaped the settlement’s layout and economy: bridges, mills and floodplain meadows are common features of the local landscape. The surrounding countryside is predominantly agricultural, with pastures and small fields typical of inland Normandy.

History and development

Aunay-sur-Odon developed as a rural market centre serving nearby villages. Like many Norman towns, it preserves traditional architecture and a parish church that reflect several phases of building and repair. The town was affected by the fighting in Normandy during the Second World War, sustaining damage and undergoing reconstruction in the post‑war decades.

Administration and recent changes

In the nationwide reorganisation of communes, Aunay-sur-Odon ceased to exist as an independent administrative entity on 1 January 2017 when it was merged into the newly established commune Les Monts d'Aunay. This change followed broader territorial reforms in which Basse‑Normandie became part of the single Normandy region.

Local economic activity has traditionally centred on agriculture, small trades and village services; weekly markets and communal events remain important to community life. Visitors are often drawn by the town’s riverside setting, historic buildings and the wider Normandy landscape.
