Ottignies-Louvain-la-Neuve is a municipality (municipality) in the Belgian (Belgian) province of Walloon Brabant. It combines the older town of Ottignies with Louvain-la-Neuve, a purpose-built university town. The area is a regional centre for education, local commerce and public transport, with a population of about 30,000 (30,188 in 2007).
Layout and component communities
The municipality includes several distinct population centres. The principal parts are:
- Ottignies — the traditional town with local services and a railway junction;
- Louvain-la-Neuve — the planned, pedestrian-oriented campus town developed for the French-speaking Catholic University (UCLouvain);
- smaller villages and residential neighbourhoods that provide a suburban and rural setting for commuters and students.
The contrast between Ottignies' older street pattern and Louvain-la-Neuve's modern, car-restricted design is one of the municipality's defining features.
History and development
Louvain-la-Neuve was built from the late 1960s onward to host the French-speaking section of the Catholic University after the linguistic reorganisation of the university. Its name literally means "New Leuven". The municipal structure bringing Ottignies and Louvain-la-Neuve together follows the pattern of Belgian municipal reorganisations in the late 20th century and reflects both historic settlement and later planned development tied to higher education.
Transport, economy and culture
Ottignies is an important regional rail junction with frequent connections to Brussels and other Walloon cities, making the municipality a commuter and transit hub. Louvain-la-Neuve's university presence supports cultural venues, student life, research activities and local businesses, including shops, cafés and facilities aimed at a young population. The combination of educational institutions and transport links shapes the local economy and daily life.
Coordinates: 50°40′N, 04°34′E. The municipality functions as both a residential suburb of the Brussels region and a standalone centre for higher education and regional services.
