Ōtemachi Station is a major underground railway hub in Chiyoda, central Tokyo. It lies beneath the Ōtemachi office district, near the Imperial Palace and within walking distance of Tokyo Station, making it one of the most important transfer points in the city.

The station is served by several lines of Tokyo Metro and the Toei Subway, including the Marunouchi, Tozai, Chiyoda, and Hanzomon lines as well as the Toei Mita Line. Because the platforms are spread across a very large underground complex, passengers often use concourses, clear signage, and connecting passages to change lines.

Role in the city

Ōtemachi Station is especially important for commuters headed to the Marunouchi and Ōtemachi business areas, where many banks, corporate headquarters, and government offices are located. It also serves visitors moving between central shopping streets, administrative districts, and the palace grounds, giving it both commuter and urban-tourist significance.

Layout and features

  • multiple interconnected platforms and concourses
  • numerous exits leading to office towers and nearby streets
  • underground pedestrian routes that connect with nearby stations and buildings
  • design adapted for very heavy daily passenger flows

The station developed as Tokyo’s subway network expanded after World War II, and it gradually became a major interchange rather than a simple local stop. Its growth reflects the layered transport planning typical of the capital, where rail lines, business districts, and pedestrian passages are closely integrated.

Ōtemachi Station should not be confused with Tokyo Station, although the two are connected in the same central district and can be reached on foot through underground routes. For many travelers, Ōtemachi is valued less for a single landmark than for the way it ties together some of the busiest rail corridors in the city.
