1 ImageHistory and administrative change
Orbe functioned as an intermediate level of government until a reorganisation of cantonal districts. In 2006 the former District of Orbe was dissolved and its territory incorporated into the larger Jura-Nord vaudois district as part of a canton-wide effort to simplify administration and modernize service delivery. Local municipalities retained their communal autonomy while some administrative responsibilities were transferred to the new district authorities.
Geography and character
The area covered by the district lay near the Jura mountain range and included a mix of agricultural land, wooded slopes and small urban centres. Settlements ranged from compact market towns to small rural villages. The region has traditionally combined agriculture, small-scale industry and services, with many residents commuting to larger urban centres for work. Transport links and local roads provide connections within the former district and to neighbouring regions.
