Auglaize County covers roughly 402 square miles and lies in western Ohio, on a landscape of fertile plains and low rolling hills. The Auglaize River and smaller streams create local floodplains that support agriculture and wildlife. Much of the county is devoted to farmland, interspersed with small woodlands, parks and residential towns.

History and government

The county was created in the mid-19th century as communities in this part of Ohio organized local government and infrastructure. Its name reflects early French influence on place names in the region; the river name is thought to refer to clay or muddy banks. Local government is organized around a board of commissioners and other elected officials who manage services, roads and courts for townships and municipalities.
