Oliena (Ulìana in Sardinian) is a town and comune in the Province of Nuoro, central-eastern Sardinia. The municipality covers about 165.74 km² and sits at roughly 379 metres above sea level; its population was about 7,101 in 2016. The settlement combines a compact historic centre with extensive surrounding countryside where vineyards, olive groves and pasturelands are prominent. Oliena is administratively a comune within the Province of Nuoro, in the island-region of Sardinia, Italy.

Geography and natural features

Oliena lies at the edge of the Supramonte karst massif. The landscape is limestone and rugged: steep ridges, dolines, caves and narrow gorges characterize the area. Mount Corrasi, a prominent limestone massif visible from town, and local caves such as Grotta Corbeddu form important natural landmarks. Vegetation is typical Mediterranean maquis with cultivated terraces and grazing land that reflect long-established land use.

History and archaeology

The territory shows signs of human presence since prehistoric times. Nuragic remains—stone towers and villages from the Bronze Age—are found in the surrounding hills, testifying to long settlement and pastoral activity. Later medieval and modern layers survive in the town’s churches, traditional buildings and road pattern.

Economy, culture and products

Agriculture and pastoralism remain important. Oliena is widely known for producing Cannonau wine, as well as olive oil and pecorino cheeses; small-scale artisanal production of textiles and crafts continues. Local festivals and religious observances preserve folk music, costume and culinary traditions that attract visitors to seasonal events.

Tourism and visiting

Outdoor recreation—hiking, climbing and speleology—draws visitors to the Supramonte trails and caves. Guided visits to archaeological sites, food markets and wine tastings offer cultural context. Practical information, opening times and event listings are available through municipal and regional tourist resources; see the town overview and municipal services for specifics.
