Ola Magnell (born Nils Olaus Lennart Karl Magnell; 20 January 1946 – 6 February 2020) was a Swedish singer-songwriter and guitarist whose career began in the early 1970s. He emerged as part of a generation of Nordic songwriters who combined pop and rock forms with literate, often wry lyrics. Magnell's recordings first appeared on Metronome Records and over several decades he developed a reputation for songs that mix melancholy, social observation and wordplay.
Early life and career beginnings
Magnell was born at Skälby gård in Sweden and took up guitar and songwriting as a young man. His first releases in the 1970s introduced listeners to his distinctive voice and melodic sensibility. While firmly rooted in popular song traditions, his work frequently reflected the concerns and conversational tone found in contemporary Scandinavian singer-songwriter circles.
Style and themes
Magnell's songwriting is noted for clear melodies and compact arrangements that put emphasis on lyrics. Themes range from personal longing and love to ironic perspectives on society and human folly. Critics and listeners have pointed to his gift for combining plainspoken storytelling with poetic turns of phrase; his music can shift from playful to sombre within a single record.
