Origins and early career

Accounts say Olaf spent part of his youth abroad and returned to Scandinavia after periods of displacement. He emerged as a prominent Viking leader and claimed royal lineage. Many narratives describe a phase of exile and raiding that established his reputation and network of supporters before he consolidated power in Norway.

Reign and policies

Olaf's reign combined maritime raids, consolidation of royal authority, and active efforts to spread Christianity. He encouraged church-building, appointed priests, and is reported to have used both persuasion and coercion to bring local rulers and populations into the new faith.
