Ogooué-Maritime Province

Geography and environment

The province occupies a stretch of Atlantic coastline characterized by mangrove swamps, river estuaries and low-lying islands. Much of its territory lies at the interface of land and sea, with tidal channels and wetlands that support fisheries, waterbirds and other coastal wildlife. These habitats are important both ecologically and for local livelihoods.

Administrative and urban features

Port-Gentil, located on a coastal island, is the administrative and economic heart of Ogooué-Maritime. The city hosts port facilities, an airport and processing facilities related to oil and shipping. Outside the provincial capital, settlements tend to be smaller and oriented to fishing, small-scale timber activities and transport along rivers and the coast.

Economy and infrastructure

The province’s economy is driven by petroleum production, refining and associated services, together with maritime trade and fishing. Port facilities and related industries create employment and connect inland production to international markets. Transport infrastructure is concentrated around Port-Gentil, which functions as a gateway for imports and exports.

History, conservation and significance

Established and developed further during the colonial period as a trading and port area, the province later grew in importance with oil discoveries and industrial investment. It also contains zones of conservation interest and segments of coastal national parks and reserves that attract researchers and visitors. The mix of industrial activity and sensitive coastal ecosystems makes Ogooué-Maritime a province of both economic importance and environmental concern.
