Geography and character

Gresham contains a mix of single-family homes, small apartment buildings and retail strips. Streets running east–west and north–south create identifiable commercial arteries where grocery stores, barber shops, restaurants and churches cluster. History and development

The neighborhood developed as part of South Side growth in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, evolving through waves of migration and economic change. For many years Gresham was the original site of the South Side Irish Parade before that annual event was relocated to the nearby Beverly neighborhood farther southwest. That parade was one of several cultural touchstones linking communities across the South Side.

Transportation

Public transit and regional roadways connect Gresham with the rest of Chicago. Riders commonly use the Chicago Transit Authority—CTA—system and its Red Line stations at 79th and 87th streets, which run along the Dan Ryan Expressway. These stops are physically close to or within the adjoining Chatham area, providing direct access to downtown and other South Side destinations.
