Overview

Audrain County is located in central Missouri in the United States. The county seat and largest city is Mexico, which serves as a center for local government, services and light industry. According to the 2010 census, the county population was 25,529; more recent estimates vary as demographics shift between small cities and rural areas (2010 census).

History

Audrain County was created in the 1830s and named for James Hunter Audrain, an early Missouri legislator and militia officer. The county grew with nineteenth-century settlement, the development of agriculture and the arrival of rail lines and roads that linked farms to markets. Local historical organizations preserve records and artifacts that document the county’s settlement, civic life and economic changes (local history).

Geography and land use

The county lies within Missouri’s agricultural plains, characterized by rolling fields, small timbered tracts and streams. Land use is predominantly cropland and pasture, with farms ranging from family operations to larger agri-business enterprises. Transportation routes—state highways and freight rail—support movement of goods and provide connections to regional markets and service centers.

Economy and communities

Agriculture remains a cornerstone of the local economy, with grain and livestock production prominent. Mexico and other small towns host manufacturing, retail and service employers that support county residents. Public institutions such as the county courthouse, public school districts and health providers are important employers and community anchors.

Culture, services and resources

Community life centers on civic organizations, schools, local fairs and high school athletics, which play a significant role in social life across the county. Museums, libraries and historical societies offer resources for residents and visitors.
