Overview

Nufenen is the historical name of a settlement in the high valley of the Rheinwald in southeastern Switzerland. The village is known in Italian as Nufena and in Romansh as Nueinas. Administratively it was a municipality within the district of Hinterrhein in the canton of Graubünden, part of the Swiss Confederation (Graubünden is the largest canton by area in Switzerland).

Geography and characteristics

Set in a mountainous landscape, Nufenen occupied a compact area of alpine pastures, steep slopes and hamlets. The region forms part of the upper reaches of the Hinterrhein (the posterior source region of the Rhine) and features typical high‑Alpine vegetation, seasonal grazing and stone-built farmsteads. Its location on a principal north–south route through the Alps has shaped local life for centuries.

History and administrative change

For administrative purposes Nufenen was grouped with neighbouring communities in the Rheinwald valley. On 1 January 2019 the former municipalities of Hinterrhein, Nufenen and Splügen were merged to form the new municipality called Rheinwald. This consolidation reflected broader cantonal efforts to streamline local government in sparsely populated mountain areas and to pool services such as schools, infrastructure maintenance and municipal administration.

Transport and economy

Nufenen lies along the road leading to the San Bernardino Tunnel, a key trans‑Alpine link that carries both local traffic and longer‑distance journeys. The presence of this route has supported small businesses catering to travelers and has made the valley more accessible year‑round compared with higher, pass‑dependent roads. Historically, the local economy combined alpine agriculture, forestry and small‑scale trade; tourism and mountain recreation play an increasingly important role.

Culture and local life

Language and tradition in the area reflect Graubünden’s multilingual character. Local customs, building styles and seasonal festivals preserve elements of Romansh and Italian cultural influence while sharing traits common to other Graubünden mountain communities. Community life centers on parish events, alpine farming calendars and outdoor activities such as hiking and winter sports.

Notable facts and distinctions

  • Nufenen’s multilingual names indicate the linguistic diversity of the canton (Italian, Romansh).
  • The municipal merger that created Rheinwald is part of a wider trend of combining small municipalities for administrative efficiency.
  • The San Bernardino road nearby provides a strategic connection through the Alps, complementing rail and tunnel infrastructure in Graubünden and beyond.

Today Nufenen is best understood as a locality within a larger municipal framework, retaining its alpine character and continuing to act as a gateway between valleys in the canton of Graubünden and the wider Swiss transport network (Switzerland).
