Nicholas Edwards, Baron Crickhowell

Early life and political beginnings

Edwards was born in London in 1934. He entered national politics as a member of the Conservative Party, winning election to the House of Commons in 1970. Over the following decade he established himself within the party and gained experience that led to his appointment to ministerial office at the start of the Thatcher government in 1979.

As Secretary of State for Wales (1979–1987) Edwards led the Welsh Office through a period of substantial economic and social change.
