Nicholas Anthony Buoniconti (December 15, 1940 – July 30, 2019) was an American professional football player best known as a hard-hitting middle linebacker. Over a 14-season career he played in both the American Football League (AFL) and the National Football League.

Professional career

Buoniconti began his professional career with the Boston Patriots and later became a cornerstone of the defensive unit for the Miami Dolphins. He earned a reputation for leadership and durability at the middle linebacker position and was a key contributor to Miami's success in the early 1970s.

Achievements

While with the Dolphins, Buoniconti was part of two championship teams, winning two Super Bowls. His performances over many seasons were recognized with his election to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2001.

Later life and death

After retiring from play, Buoniconti remained involved in efforts to support medical research related to spinal cord injury. He died on July 30, 2019, in Bridgehampton, New York, at the age of 78.
