Overview

Mogelsberg is a village in the Toggenburg area of the canton of St. Gallen, in eastern Switzerland. For much of its recent history it functioned as an autonomous municipality within the district before an administrative reorganisation took place at the start of 2009. The settlement is known locally for its rural character and views across the surrounding prealpine landscape.

Location and characteristics

Mogelsberg sits within the cultural region known as Toggenburg, a valley and upland area noted for pastoral countryside, woodlands and small villages. The community has traditionally been oriented around agriculture and forestry, with a mixture of family farms, small businesses and services supporting residents. Its location offers access to walking trails and countryside recreation typical of northeastern Swiss hill country.

History and development

The settlement has medieval roots and developed as a local centre for the surrounding rural area. Over time Mogelsberg adapted to changing economic patterns: while agriculture remained important, residents increasingly relied on regional towns for work, education and specialised services. Local civic institutions and community associations continued to shape village life.

Merger into Neckertal

On 1 January 2009 Mogelsberg ceased to be an independent municipality when it joined with Brunnadern and St. Peterzell to form the new municipality called Neckertal. The consolidation was intended to improve administrative efficiency, coordinate local services and strengthen the provision of public infrastructure across the neighbouring communities.

Present-day relevance

Today Mogelsberg remains a distinct village within the larger municipal structure. It continues to attract residents who value a rural setting with regional connections, and it contributes to the cultural identity of Toggenburg through local traditions, community events and landscape stewardship.
