Mittlerer Erzgebirgskreis — former rural district in Saxony, Germany

Mittlerer Erzgebirgskreis was a rural district in the Free State of Saxony, located in the central Ore Mountains. It was dissolved in the 2008 Saxony district reform and its territory was reassigned to successor districts.

The Mittlerer Erzgebirgskreis was a rural district (Landkreis) in the Free State of Saxony, Germany. Situated in the central part of the Erzgebirge (Ore Mountains), the district encompassed a predominantly upland landscape and a number of small towns and villages. Its administrative seat was in Marienberg, which served as the local centre for administration and services.

Geography and character

The district occupied a hilly to mountainous terrain shaped by old mining activity and dense forest cover. Elevation and slopes made parts of the area suited to forestry, outdoor recreation and seasonal winter sports. The Ore Mountains region is known for its distinct cultural landscape of mining-related settlements, carved wooden crafts and traditional folk customs.

History and administration

Mittlerer Erzgebirgskreis was created during late-20th-century administrative reorganizations in Saxony and existed until the state-wide district reform of 2008. In that reform the district was dissolved and its territory was transferred into larger successor districts; much of the area became part of a newly constituted Erzgebirgskreis and other neighbouring administrative units.

Economy, culture and importance

The district economy combined light industry, small manufacturing, forestry and services, with tourism and craftwork playing a notable role. The Ore Mountains have a long history of mining (notably silver and other metals) that shaped settlement patterns and local traditions. Handicrafts such as wood carving and the manufacture of Christmas ornaments are emblematic of the broader region.

Notable facts and legacy

  • Part of the wider Erzgebirge cultural landscape with a legacy of historic mining.
  • Administrative centre: Marienberg, serving as the district seat while the district existed.
  • Dissolved in 2008 as part of Saxony's effort to reduce and reorganize districts.
