Mitsuo Itoh: Japanese Grand Prix motorcycle racer and Isle of Man TT winner

Mitsuo Itoh (1 January 1937 – 3 July 2019) was a Japanese motorcycle road racer who competed at Grand Prix level in the 1960s. He became known for his performances in the ultra-lightweight 50cc category and for racing as part of the factory effort of Suzuki on the international scene.

Itoh began his World Championship career in 1961 and remained active until 1967. Over seven seasons he started 29 Grand Prix races, claimed two victories and recorded 13 podium finishes. One of his most notable accomplishments was winning the 1963 Isle of Man TT 50cc Ultra-Lightweight Tourist Trophy, a result that brought attention to both the rider and his manufacturer.

His second Grand Prix victory came at the 1967 50cc Japanese Grand Prix, which was also the final race of his Grand Prix career. Throughout this period Itoh rode machines developed for short, high-revving events and helped demonstrate the competitiveness of Japanese small-capacity engineering against established European rivals.

The 50cc class emphasized precision, momentum and engine tuning rather than outright power. Races in this category, and especially the Isle of Man TT with its long public-road circuit and varied conditions, tested a rider's concentration and the reliability of the machinery. Success in such events raised the international standing of riders like Itoh and the manufacturers they represented.
