Mission is a district municipality in the Lower Mainland region of British Columbia, Canada. Located on the north bank of the Fraser River east of Vancouver, Mission combines urban neighbourhoods and surrounding rural areas and is part of the broader Abbotsford–Mission area.
Overview
Originally established around a 19th‑century Roman Catholic mission, the community developed as a service and agricultural centre for the Fraser Valley. Today Mission retains a mix of residential, commercial and agricultural land uses, with outdoor recreation opportunities along the river and nearby hills.
Government
The municipality is governed by a mayor and council. The current mayor is Pam Alexis.
Population
According to the 2006 Canadian census the population of Mission was 34,505. The community has experienced growth since that census, reflecting regional expansion in the Fraser Valley.
Transportation and economy
Mission serves as a regional hub for surrounding rural communities. Local economic activities include retail and service industries, agriculture and resource-based businesses. Commuter and regional transit connections provide access to neighbouring centres and to the Vancouver metropolitan area.
