Minister President of Prussia

Role and responsibilities

As head of the Prussian cabinet, the Minister President presided over ministers, coordinated state policy, and represented Prussia to other German states and to the imperial government after 1871. Under the monarchy the holder often served at the king's pleasure and combined ministerial leadership with loyalty to royal prerogative. After 1918, when Prussia became a Free State within the Weimar Republic, the office functioned more like a modern parliamentary premier, accountable to the state parliament.

Historical development

The office emerged in the upheaval of 1848 and took on new significance after German unification, when Prussia became the dominant state of the German Empire. Throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries the Minister President could be a major figure in national politics, especially when one man held both the Prussian premiership and the imperial chancellorship.
