Midden-Groningen

History and formation

The municipality was created on 1 January 2018 through the administrative merger of three former municipalities: Hoogezand-Sappemeer, Menterwolde and Slochteren. The consolidation was part of a national trend of municipal reorganisation intended to improve administrative efficiency and public services.
