He maintained a low personal profile while running the company as a family-owned concern. His sons, Pietro Ferrero Jr. and Giovanni Ferrero, were involved in company leadership; Giovanni later took on the chief executive role following Michele’s retirement.

Ferrero emphasized quality ingredients, consistent branding and careful distribution. Michele introduced or promoted innovations in packaging, marketing and product formulation that suited post-war European markets and later global consumers. The company remained privately controlled and was often cited in media as the richest man in Italy during parts of his career and as one of the richest in Europe, reflecting the value of the firm and its extensive international operations.

The company he shaped remains a major player in the international confectionery industry and a notable example of a successful family-owned multinational.
His death in 2015 marked the end of an era for the firm’s founding generation, but the business practices and product portfolio he established continue to influence the confectionery market.
