Characteristics

Meitei is typified by subject–object–verb (SOV) word order and agglutinative morphology, where words are formed by adding a sequence of suffixes to roots. It has a distinct phonology with tonal or pitch-like contrasts reported in many analyses, and a core vocabulary that reflects its Tibeto-Burman heritage while also showing borrowings from neighboring languages.

Meitei historically used its indigenous script known as Meitei Mayek. The language developed from earlier stages often described collectively as Ancient Meitei.
