Max spent his career in Brazilian football, appearing for several clubs across state and national competitions. He is most often associated with Portuguesa-RJ and Vila Nova, and he also represented Botafogo during his professional years. Like many goalkeepers who build careers in Brazil’s competitive club system, he combined spells at smaller state sides with opportunities at higher-profile teams.
Role and characteristics
As a goalkeeper, Max occupied a specialized position that emphasizes shot-stopping, aerial ability, organization of the defensive line and distribution. Reports and contemporary accounts describe him as a committed professional in a role that requires consistency and resilience. Goalkeepers in domestic leagues such as those he played in often serve as experienced leaders for younger defenders and contribute to set-piece defense.
Assault and medical complications
In June 2017 Max was the victim of an attempted robbery. During that incident he suffered a fractured right hand and was diagnosed with cerebral edema, a dangerous swelling of the brain. The swelling required medical treatment and marked a turning point in his health.
Death and response
On 26 July 2017 Max died in Rio de Janeiro from complications related to cerebral edema. His passing prompted condolences from former teammates, clubs and supporters who recalled his career. The circumstances of the assault and its fatal outcome drew attention to violence affecting former athletes and public safety concerns in the region.
Legacy and context
Max’s career is representative of many professional players in Brazil who build reputations across multiple clubs rather than on international stardom. He is remembered locally by the clubs and communities where he played.
