Maurice Green (May 5, 1926 – December 5, 2017) was an American virologist and laboratory leader whose work over more than sixty years helped establish modern approaches to the study of animal viruses and their relationships to cancer. Born in New York City, Green became known for translating laboratory methods into sustained research programs and for building an institutional home for molecular virology.
Research and contributions
Green is widely regarded as a pioneer in the laboratory study of animal and tumor viruses. His investigations contributed to a clearer picture of how viral infections can alter cell behavior and, in some cases, lead to malignant transformation. Over his long career he was associated with:
- the development and refinement of cell-culture and biochemical techniques used to grow and characterize animal viruses,
- studies on virus–host interactions that illuminated mechanisms of viral replication and persistence, and
- research that helped connect virology with cancer biology, motivating later work on oncogenic viruses and viral oncology.
Institute of Molecular Virology and leadership
In the late 1950s Green founded the Institute of Molecular Virology at St. Louis University School of Medicine and served as its long‑time chairman. Under his direction the institute became a training ground for scientists and a center for collaborative studies that bridged virology, cell biology and pathology. The institute’s history and early records have been preserved and discussed in historical summaries and archives (Institute history).
Legacy and significance
Beyond specific experiments, Green’s legacy includes his role as mentor and program builder. Colleagues and trainees recall his emphasis on rigorous laboratory practice and on linking basic research questions to clinical and biological significance. Although the details of individual studies are technical, his career exemplifies mid‑20th‑century transitions in biology when molecular methods reshaped understanding of infectious agents and disease.
Maurice Green died in St. Louis, Missouri, on December 5, 2017, at the age of 91. He is remembered for advancing animal virology as an experimental discipline and for founding an institute that sustained virus research for generations of scientists.
