Maryanne Trump Barry (born April 5, 1937) is an American attorney and former federal judge. She served on the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit after being nominated to that court in 1999 by President Bill Clinton. A member of a prominent New York family, she is the older sister of Donald Trump, the 45th President of the United States. Her career spanned several decades of trial and appellate work and included both active service and senior status on the federal bench.

Early life and education

Barry was born in New York City and attended liberal arts and graduate programs before pursuing a law degree. She studied at Mount Holyoke College and later took courses at Columbia University. She earned her Juris Doctor at Hofstra University School of Law. After law school she entered private practice and later held government and judicial positions that prepared her for federal appointment.

Judicial career and responsibilities

Before her elevation to the Court of Appeals, Barry served on the federal trial bench. In 1999 she was appointed to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, the intermediate appellate court that reviews decisions from federal courts in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware. As an appellate judge she participated in panels that considered a wide range of civil and criminal matters, including questions of constitutional law, administrative law and federal procedure. She took senior status later in her career and retired from active service in 2011.

Roles, impact and judicial practice

On the federal bench Barry was known for the routine work of appellate judging: reviewing records from trial courts, writing and joining opinions, and applying precedent. Appellate judges shape the development of federal law by resolving legal disputes that clarify statutory and constitutional issues. Her tenure contributed to the body of Third Circuit precedent and reflected the responsibilities of a career jurist who moved from trial-level work to the appellate stage.

Personal life and public profile

Maryanne Trump Barry has kept a relatively private personal life compared with some public figures. She was married to David Desmond from 1960 until their divorce in 1980 and later married John Barry in 1982; he died in 2000. She has one son, David. Her relationship to a presidential figure brought occasional public attention to her judicial service, but she remained a member of the federal judiciary governed by established rules on ethics and recusal.

Notable facts and distinctions

  • Barry is one of several siblings in the Trump family who entered public life.
  • She held positions at both the trial and appellate levels of the federal court system, a progression followed by many career judges.
  • Her appointment to the Third Circuit placed her in a court that frequently handles significant commercial and constitutional appeals from three northeastern states.

The arc of Barry's career illustrates a common pathway in the United States federal judiciary: legal education, private or government practice, appointment to a district court, and elevation to a court of appeals.
