Overview
Martisberg was a small mountain municipality located in the upper Rhone valley of the canton of Valais, in the southwestern part of Switzerland. Traditionally rural and alpine in character, it formed part of the administrative area associated with the district centered on Raron.
Geography and characteristics
The settlement occupied a compact area typical of high-valley villages, with rocky slopes, seasonal pastures and buildings adapted to mountain conditions. Like many neighbouring communities it combined agricultural roots with modern tourism influences. Access to the locality reflected the steep terrain and seasonal weather common to the Valais Alps.
History and recent changes
Martisberg existed for centuries as a small local municipality. On 1 January 2014 the former municipalities of Betten and Martisberg were administratively merged to form the new municipality of Bettmeralp. The merger was part of a broader trend in Switzerland of combining small local governments to improve efficiency and public services.
Importance and uses
The area around Martisberg contributes to regional tourism, especially alpine walking and winter recreation, and to the cultural landscape of Valais. The merged entity is associated with the car-free resort and high-altitude village of Bettmeralp, which draws visitors for mountain scenery and access to glacier viewpoints.
