Background and meaning

Karaikal Ammaiyar is remembered for her austere devotion and hymns in praise of Shiva. Legend holds that she offered food to a wandering devotee who was actually Shiva in disguise. That act of hospitality—often referred to locally as Amuthu Padayal—became the focus of an annual ritual, in which fruit and blessed food are presented and shared. The festival's name evokes the mango, a fruit associated with the season when the celebration takes place.

Rituals and typical events

The Mangani Festival combines temple rites with popular customs. Local temples mark the day with special puja for the image associated with Bikshantar. In the streets and temple precincts devotees distribute or collect fruit and prasadam as a sign of blessing. Common elements include:

• Processions and devotional singing in honor of Karaikal Ammaiyar and Shiva.
