Verbitskaya's scholarship focused on aspects of the Russian language and language education. Leadership at Saint Petersburg State University

Verbitskaya held senior administrative roles at Saint Petersburg State University for many years. She served as rector from 1994 to 2008 and then as university president from 2008 until 2019. Under her stewardship the university pursued modernization of curricula, expanded research activities and worked to enhance international collaboration. Her tenure is associated with efforts to preserve the institution's historic traditions while adapting to contemporary academic and social challenges.

Public service and influence on education policy

Beyond the university, Verbitskaya took on wider responsibilities in Russian education. From 2013 to 2018 she chaired the Russian Academy of Education, a leading advisory body on pedagogical science and school reform. In these roles she engaged with debates about teacher preparation, national standards for Russian language instruction and the professional development of educators.

Verbitskaya was widely respected in academic and educational circles for her combination of scholarship and institutional leadership. She died in St. Petersburg on 24 November 2019 at the age of 83.
