The London Borough of Barnet [ˈbɑːnɪt] is a borough of London, located in the north of the city. It was formed from the Municipal Borough of Finchley, the Municipal Borough of Hendon and the Friern Barnet Urban District in the county of Middlesex, and the East Barnet Urban District and the Barnet Urban District in the county of Hertfordshire when the Greater London administrative region was created in 1965.
Barnet is twinned with the Berlin district of Tempelhof-Schöneberg and the district of Siegen-Wittgenstein in North Rhine-Westphalia, as well as with towns in France (Chaville, Le Raincy) and Israel (Ramat Gan). The Missionary Society of St. Joseph of Mill Hill, founded by Herbert Cardinal Vaughan, is named after the College of St. Joseph, located in the Mill Hill district. Barnet is home to one of the city's most exclusive residential areas, The Bishop's Avenue. The Colindale area is home to the British Library's Newspaper Library, which is the largest collection of periodicals in Europe, with over 50,000 continuously sourced newspapers and magazines.
In the borough of Golders Green is Golders Green Crematorium, the first crematorium in London when it opened in 1902 and one of the oldest crematoria in Britain. Opposite, on the other side of Hoop Lane, is Golders Green Jewish Cemetery, where Rufus Isaacs, 1st Marquess of Reading, and Leo Baeck, among others, are buried.
The population in 2011 was 64.1% White, 18.5% Asian and 7.7% Black; 4.9% reported belonging to another ethnic group and 4.8% to more than one. Barnet has one of the highest Chinese populations in the UK at 2.3% and the highest Jewish population at 15.5% of the population.
