Network and main stations

The operator covered the national rail network in Wales plus a number of cross-border services into England. Arriva Trains Wales held the Wales and Borders franchise under the UK rail franchising system from the early 2000s until the franchise was awarded to a successor operator in 2018. During its tenure the company managed daily services, staffed stations and worked with local authorities and central bodies on service planning. Like other regional operators it faced challenges including rolling-stock shortages, peak overcrowding and infrastructure constraints, and its period of operation is often cited in discussions about regional rail investment, devolution of transport responsibilities and the need for fleet renewal.
