Layout and facilities

The station provides underground platforms and interchange passages for both the North East Line and the Downtown Line, together with multiple street-level entrances and lifts for step-free access. Standard commuter amenities are available: ticketing machines, fare gates, passenger information displays, escalators, and tactile guidance for visually impaired users. The station integrates pedestrian links to nearby sidewalks and bus stops to facilitate multimodal transfers.

History and development

Little India first opened with the North East Line on 20 June 2003, as part of Singapore’s early expansion of driverless, high-capacity metro service. It later became an interchange when the Downtown Line (Stage 2) was extended through the area; the DTL platforms and transfer connections opened on 22 December 2013. The interchange was designed to improve orbital movement across the city and to provide a direct rail connection to the dense commercial corridors around Serangoon Road.

Surrounding area and importance

The station is a primary transit point for residents, workers and tourists visiting Little India. Nearby points of interest within easy walking distance include:

• Tekka Centre and Tekka Market, a multi-purpose hawker, wet market and retail complex
• Serangoon Road and the Little India Arcade, known for textiles, spices and traditional goods
• Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple and other cultural landmarks
• Various restaurants, small retailers and festival venues used during major cultural celebrations such as Deepavali

Operational notes and notable facts

On the Downtown Line the station lies very close to Rochor station; travel time between the two is only around 20–25 seconds by train, making them among the nearest adjacent stops in the network. Little India station handles higher passenger volumes during peak periods and festival seasons, and its role as an interchange helps distribute commuter flows between the northeastern corridor and central districts. As with most central Singapore stations, it is maintained to meet accessibility and safety standards and forms part of a larger integrated public-transport network.
