Overview

Les Agettes was a small, French-speaking alpine settlement that until 2017 functioned as an independent municipality. It lay within the district of Hérens and the canton of Valais in southwestern Switzerland. In 2017 the locality was merged into the neighbouring city of Sion, ending its status as a separate commune and bringing local administration under the larger municipal structure.

Geography and landscape

Perched on the slopes above the Rhône valley, Les Agettes overlooks mixed mountain terrain of pastures, woods and small hamlets. The area illustrates the upland landscape typical of Valais, with seasonal grazing, terraces and scattered dwellings adapted to steep terrain. Local roads connect the village to the valley floor and to surrounding villages.

History and administration

Administratively part of Hérens, Les Agettes managed communal services through a small municipal council until its incorporation into Sion. Such mergers reflect a wider Swiss trend of combining small communes to improve service delivery and planning. Historical records and municipal archives document local land use, traditional architecture and community life.

Economy, society and culture

The local economy combined small-scale agriculture, livestock grazing and forestry with seasonal tourism and residential uses. Many inhabitants practised mixed farming; more recently some properties have been used as second homes or holiday rentals. Cultural life preserved Valaisan French speech, alpine customs and seasonal festivals linked to farming cycles.
