Characteristics

Articles are created and maintained by volunteer editors working in Armenian. The project supports both major regional standards of the language — Eastern and Western Armenian — and includes interface tools to accommodate users who read or write in different orthographic conventions. Content follows the general Wikimedia licensing and editorial policies adapted to local needs, including article structure, citation practices, and community governance.

History and development

After its start in 2003 the Armenian Wikipedia grew steadily as contributors added content on history, culture, biographies, and sciences. Community activity has included organizing edit-a-thons, improving coverage of Armenian topics, and coordinating with related Wikimedia projects. By October 2015 it was ranked among the larger language editions; by June 2022 it contained over 292,000 articles, reflecting sustained development over time.

Uses and significance

The Armenian Wikipedia functions as an accessible reference for students, educators, journalists, and the general public. It helps preserve and disseminate knowledge in the Armenian language, supports education in Armenian-speaking communities, and provides a place to document local and national subjects that may be underrepresented in other languages. Its articles are commonly linked from other educational resources and used as starting points for research.

Notable features

  • Armenian-language interface and article titles in Armenian script.
  • Support for different Armenian orthographies and editorial conventions.
  • Integration with the wider Wikimedia ecosystem, including sister projects and interlanguage links.
  • The main project site is available at Armenian Wikipedia, where readers can browse and contribute.

The project continues to evolve as volunteers expand its coverage and improve reliability. New contributors are encouraged to read local guidelines and participate in the community to help keep the encyclopedia current and useful.
