Overview
Leibnitz District is an administrative district in the Austrian state of Styria. Its administrative centre is the town of Leibnitz. The district occupies a part of southern Styria close to the Slovenian border and is known for its rural landscape, viticulture and small towns that combine agricultural life with local industry and tourism. For official information see the district page: Leibnitz District.
Geography and landscape
The district spans gently rolling hills, vineyard terraces and river valleys. The Mur River and its tributaries influence local farming and settlement patterns. South Styrian slopes and the Sausal hills create a mosaic of vineyards, orchards and meadows that shape the district’s scenic character and agricultural economy.
Administration and municipalities
In 2015 a municipal structural reform in Styria altered the number and boundaries of many local municipalities; Leibnitz District was affected by these changes and is now organised into consolidated municipalities that group towns and villages for administration. The district includes the administrative centre Leibnitz and a number of wine-producing and market towns such as Gamlitz, Ehrenhausen and Spielfeld.
Economy, culture and tourism
Viticulture and fruit growing are important economic activities; the district is part of the South Styria wine region and hosts seasonal wine festivals and markets. Small and medium-sized enterprises, light manufacturing and services complement agriculture. Visitors are attracted by wine routes, local gastronomy, village festivals and countryside recreation.
Transport and connections
Leibnitz District has regional road and rail connections that link it with Graz and neighbouring Slovenia, facilitating commuting, trade and tourism. Cross-border links near Spielfeld are particularly significant for international traffic and local commerce.
