Overview
Southern California covers a broad, densely populated region in the southwestern part of the state. When people speak of the largest cities there, they usually mean municipalities with the highest resident counts within counties such as Los Angeles, Orange, San Diego, Riverside, San Bernardino and Ventura. The single largest city in the region is Los Angeles, followed by San Diego. Beyond those two, a wide mix of coastal, inland and suburban cities make up the region’s urban fabric.
Defining the region and rankings
Lists of the "largest" cities depend on jurisdictional boundaries and published population estimates. Some compilations rank incorporated cities only, others include metropolitan areas or unincorporated communities. For a detailed ranked list of principal municipalities and their relative sizes, see the complete ranked list.
Historical growth
Settlement and growth in Southern California accelerated from the 18th century missions through 19th century rail and port development. The 20th century brought rapid urbanization: Hollywood and the entertainment industry, defense and aerospace in the midcentury, and postwar suburban expansion. That layered history produced a region with very large central cities as well as extensive suburban municipalities.
Economic and cultural roles
Large Southern California cities perform varied roles: Los Angeles as an international cultural and commercial center; San Diego with major military and biotech sectors; ports and logistics hubs around Long Beach and Los Angeles; tourism in coastal cities; and inland manufacturing, logistics and commuter suburbs in the Inland Empire. These cities also host diverse populations and significant cultural institutions, universities and industry clusters.
