Geography and climate

The district combines low coastal plains with rising foothills. Its climate is notably humid and mild compared with much of Azerbaijan, earning it a reputation for lush vegetation. Archaeological work indicates human settlement here since at least the Bronze Age, and the area later became the centre of the Talysh Khanate in the 18th century.
