Overview

Lalleyriat was a small rural commune located in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes area, within the administrative department of Ain in the east of France. On 1 January 2016 it was merged with a neighbouring commune to form the new municipality Le Poizat-Lalleyriat. The change was part of a wider movement, encouraged by national and regional authorities, to create "communes nouvelles" and consolidate local services (regional reform information).

Geography and environment

The former commune occupied upland and plateau terrain typical of this part of Ain: pasture and meadowland interspersed with mixed woodland, small streams and lanes connecting hamlets. Agriculture and seasonal grazing have been the dominant land uses, with a landscape that supports outdoor activities such as walking and local nature observation. Accessibility is by departmental roads linking to larger market towns in the region.

History and administration

Like other French communes, Lalleyriat had a mayor and municipal council responsible for local services until its merger. The administrative reorganisation that produced Le Poizat-Lalleyriat reflects practical aims: pooling resources, simplifying governance and maintaining public amenities. Official records and decisions about the merger are held in departmental archives and notices (Ain departmental records).

Economy, culture and heritage

The local economy was largely agricultural, supplemented by forestry, small trades and modest rural tourism. Cultural identity has been retained in village festivals, local associations and historic buildings such as small churches or farmhouses. Place names and communal memory persist in signage and local usage even after administrative consolidation.
