Overview

La Flocellière was a small administrative commune in the west of France, located within the department of Vendée and the region of Pays de la Loire. On 1 January 2016 it ceased to exist as an independent municipality when it joined other nearby communes to form the new commune called Sèvremont. Its identity today is preserved in local place names, cadastral records and the memory of residents.

Geography and landscape

The area around La Flocellière is typical of inland western France: a patchwork of small fields, hedgerows and woodlands often referred to as bocage. The countryside supports mixed agriculture and offers a network of lanes and footpaths that link hamlets, farms and village centres. The local setting is rural rather than urban, with a landscape shaped by centuries of small-scale farming and local drainage works.

History and administration

As with many French communes, La Flocellière developed around a village core and its parish institutions. Over time administrative reforms and efforts to rationalize local government led to voluntary or mandated mergers of small communes. The incorporation into Sèvremont on 1 January 2016 followed this wider trend: merging municipalities to pool resources, simplify governance and maintain services for residents.

Characteristics and local life

  • Rural economy: predominately agriculture, small businesses and local artisans.
  • Community life: village fêtes, associations and seasonal markets typical of the Vendée countryside.
  • Infrastructure: basic services managed at the level of the new commune of Sèvremont.

Built heritage and notable features

The built environment reflects regional traditions: a parish church or chapel, traditional stone or rendered farmhouses, barns and narrow lanes framed by hedgerows. While La Flocellière itself is now administratively part of a larger commune, these elements continue to convey the locality's historical character and attract walkers and visitors interested in rural heritage.

Today and further information

Administratively, La Flocellière is represented within the municipal council of Sèvremont and in departmental structures of the Vendée. For current municipal services, demographic data or cultural events consult the offices of Sèvremont or departmental sources. Historical records, maps and local associations are useful starting points for anyone researching the former commune and its place in the regional landscape.
