Mythological Argonauts

In classical myth the Argonauts accompanied the hero Jason on a maritime expedition. The ship Argo, said to have been built by the craftsman Argus, carried a roster of famous figures from Greek legend. Sources vary in the exact list, but commonly cited companions include Heracles, Orpheus, Castor and Pollux and other heroes. The story blends themes of exploration, perilous sea travel and trials that reflect wider heroic traditions in ancient literature.

Biological use: Argonauta (paper nautiluses)

Argonauta is also the name of a genus of pelagic octopods often called paper nautiluses. Females secrete a thin, fragile eggcase that resembles a coiled shell and encrusts eggs and helps with buoyancy, which led to their common name. They are not true nautiluses (which belong to a different cephalopod group) but display striking sexual dimorphism and an aerial, open-ocean lifestyle.

Modern names and cultural uses

By analogy with the original voyagers, "Argonaut" has been applied widely as a name and metaphor. It appears in sports team names (notably the Toronto Argonauts in Canadian football), in company and product names, on ships and in works of fiction and entertainment. The label often conveys exploration, daring or seafaring tradition.
