Overview
Kyburg is a village and former municipality in the district of Pfäffikon in the canton of Zürich, in northeastern Switzerland. The settlement is dominated by Kyburg Castle, a well-preserved medieval fortress on a wooded hill above agricultural lowlands. Administratively Kyburg functioned as a small local municipality (former municipality) until it was merged into the neighbouring municipality of Illnau-Effretikon on 1 January 2016.
History
The name and identity of the place derive from the castle and the comital family that held the surrounding lands in the High Middle Ages. Over centuries the castle and its estates passed through different regional authorities and served various roles, including residence, local administration and defensive stronghold. In more recent times the fortress and village have been preserved as part of the region's historic heritage.

Kyburg Castle is the principal landmark and cultural resource. Its preserved medieval fabric, courtyards and fortified appearance make it a clear example of a hilltop castle typical of Central Europe. Administration and merger
Before the merger Kyburg operated its own municipal council with responsibility for local matters. The 2016 incorporation into Illnau-Effretikon aligned administrative services with a larger local authority, a common arrangement intended to improve efficiency while preserving local identity and heritage roles.
