Geography and climate

Set inland on a plateau, Kuito has a milder climate than coastal areas, with a distinct rainy season and a cooler dry season. The surrounding landscape is used largely for mixed farming and cattle rearing; soils on parts of the plateau support grains and root crops. Seasonal rains shape planting and harvesting cycles and influence road conditions outside the rainy months.

History

The locality has pre‑colonial roots and was developed further during the Portuguese colonial period as an administrative town. After Angola's independence in 1975, decades of civil conflict caused substantial damage, population displacement and disruption of services. Since the ceasefire in the early 2000s, national and international efforts have focused on rebuilding housing, public infrastructure and restoring basic services.

Economy and transport

Kuito's economy centres on agriculture, trade and public administration. Local markets trade produce and livestock from surrounding districts. Road links connect Kuito to other inland towns and to transport corridors toward the coast; an airstrip has been used for domestic flights and for aid operations. Restoring transport and supply lines has been important for reviving commerce and access to services.

The population includes people from several ethnic backgrounds common to central Angola, including groups such as the Ovimbundu, and Portuguese is widely used in administration and commerce. Local languages are frequently spoken in communities. Schools, clinics and civic institutions have been gradually reestablished, and religious, cultural and market events remain important to social life. Post‑conflict recovery has also included demining and removal of unexploded ordnance to improve safety and enable farming and reconstruction.
