Overview

Kumamoto Prefecture (熊本県) occupies a central position on the island of Kyushu in southern Japan. Its capital and largest city is Kumamoto. The prefecture includes coastal plains, interior basins and volcanic highlands, and it serves as a regional center for government, education and transport.

Geography and natural features

Kumamoto's landscape is varied: fertile lowlands support agriculture while the interior contains rugged terrain and volcanic features. Mount Aso, located in the northeast of the prefecture, is notable for its large caldera and active volcanic vents, and its slopes form part of a national park. The coast along the Yatsushiro Sea and Ariake Sea includes tidal flats and fishing communities.

History and recent events

The area has a long history of settlement and feudal development; Kumamoto Castle is one of Japan's most famous castles and a symbol of the city. Like other regions in Japan, Kumamoto has faced natural challenges: notable seismic activity, including significant earthquakes in 2016, affected infrastructure and communities and prompted reconstruction and resilience efforts.

Economy, culture and cuisine

The local economy blends agriculture, light industry and services. Farms produce rice, vegetables and fruit, and seafood is important along the coast. Cultural life includes festivals, historic gardens and performing arts. Regional foods include distinctive ramen styles and local specialties such as horse sashimi (known locally as basashi), offered in many traditional restaurants.
